Luc Tuymans curates: A Vision of Central Europe by PHAIDON

It has been suggested that, for a city with such a rich heritage, Bruges has few dedicated art institutions. But what the city lacks in permanent galleries – primarily those concerned with contemporary art – it has more than made up for with its recent series of highly successful

'Master poet' Miroslaw Balka gets Tate's Turbine Hall commission by Nosheen Iqbal

A crack running through the floor, a helter-skelter and a simulated sunrise have all been part of Tate Modern’s popular Turbine Hall series. Now the gallery has announced that Polish artist Miroslaw Balka is the 10th person to receive the prestigious commission.

Why Miroslaw Balka is a great choice for the Tate's Turbine Hall by Adrian Searle

Polish artist Miroslaw Balka is an almost perfect choice to take on the 10th Unilever Turbine Hall commission, which was announced yesterday and opens on 13 October. The echoing space, the concrete floor, the long perspective down the ramp of Tate Modern present ideal possibilities for Balka, whose work has always concerned itself with history, disquiet and unease.

A journey into the terror of sensory deprivation – nearly by Michael Glover

Things are getting worse and worse and worse! Those words, once uttered, with the most resounding lugubriousness, by the great poet and translator Michael Hamburger, ring in my ears as I approach Miroslaw Balka’s giant black, ship’s container-like installation at the back end of Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall.

Dark arts in Turbine Hall by Arifa Akbar

Once there was light, in the form of a fake sun beaming down at thousands of basking visitors at Tate Modern. Now, the gallery’s vast Turbine Hall has been filled with darkness. The latest sculpture to dominate the room is a windowless, 13 metre-high chamber, reminiscent of a giant shipping container, which visitors can access by ascending a ramp. Inside, the exhibit is nothing but 30 metres of dark matter – the further one progresses into the structure, the less is visible.

Miroslaw Balka on the ghosts of Treblinka by Adrian Searle

Dusk, and I am stumbling around in a dark wood behind the sculptorMiroslaw Balka. We emerge from the pine trees on to a track where a line of rough standing stones, each about the size of a man, marks the original perimeter of the death camp at Treblinka, deep in the Polish countryside. We are the only ones here.

Miroslaw Balka's How It Is at the Tate Modern, review by Richard Dorment

Very few works of art have actually scared the wits out of me, but Miroslaw Balka’s How It Is – the 10th in Tate Modern’s hugely successful annual commissions sponsored by Unilever – was among them. At least, it did at the beginning. The walk from the main entrance of the Turbine Hall to the place where you first encounter Balka’s sculpture is as long and as drawn-out as possible.
