Der amerikanische Künstler Allan McCollum stellt mit seinen in Serienproduktion hergestellten Objekten und den daraus entstehenden Installationen die Einzigartigkeit von Kunstwerken in Frage. Seine „Plaster Surrogates“ – Gips-Objekte, die aus der Distanz dem Aussehen gerahmter Gemälde entsprechen, machten ihn berühmt. Ende der Achtziger Jahre konnten seine Installationen der „Surrogates“, „Perpetual Photos“ und „Perfect Vehicles“ sowohl bei Portikus in Frankfurt am Main, als auch bei Stichting De Appel in Amsterdam betrachtet werden.
Der zur Ausstellung erschienen Katalog „Allan McCollum“ dokumentiert neben der Bestandsaufnahme von Allan McCollums Werk in den Achtziger Jahren auch seine damals neue Arbeit „Individual Works“, obwohl diese aufgrund der räumlichen Situation der Ausstellungsorte nicht gezeigt werden konnte. Die Publikation beinhaltet Installationsansichten und Abbildungen von Allan McCollums Werk sowie Texte der Künstlerin Andrea Fraser und des damaligen Kurators am Portikus Ulrich Wilmes über das künstlerische Schaffen von McCollum.

With his serially produced objects and the installations that emerge from them, the American artist Allan McCollum questions the uniqueness of the artwork. He made a name for himself with his Plaster Surrogates which, when seen from a distance, look like framed paintings. At the end of the 1980s his Surrogates installations Perpetual Photos and Perfect Vehicles were presented at the Portikus in Frankfurt am Main as well as the Stichting De Appel in Amsterdam.
Entitled Allan McCollum, the catalogue accompanying that show provides a survey of the artist's artistic production of the 1980s and documents a piece called Individual Works, even though the latter – which was new at the time – could not be exhibited owing to the spatial situations at the two venues. The publication contains installation views and illustrations of Allan McCollum's work as well as texts about his approach to art by the artist Andrea Fraser and the curator of the show at the Portikus, Ulrich Wilmes.
