Das Künstlerduo Carla Arocha (geb. 1961 in Caracas, Venezuela) und Stéphane Schraenen (geb. 1971 in Antwerpen, Belgien) ist seit 2006 gemeinsam künstlerisch tätig. Beide leben und arbeiten in Antwerpen, Belgien.
Ausgangspunkt ihrer Arbeiten sind oft, nicht immer, Fotografien profaner, alltäglicher Gegenstände, deren Funktionalität und Individualität während des künstlerischen Transformationsprozesses soweit reduziert wird, bis nur noch die ursprüngliche Idee vorhanden ist. Bewusst unterdrücken Arocha & Schraenen künstlerische Handschrift und individuellen Gestus durch die Verwendung industrieller Herstellungsverfahren und einer modularen bzw. seriellen Gestaltungsweise.
Der Katalog „What Now?“ wurde von der Galerie Isabella Czarnowska, Berlin anlässlich der dortigen Ausstellung „Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen: What Now?“ (20. September bis 30. November 2013) herausgegeben. Neben einem einführenden Text von dem britischen Autor und Kurator Ken Pratt, beinhaltet der Katalog zwei Interviews, geführt von Helen Molesworth, Chefkuratorin des Institute of Contemporary Art Boston. Die Gespräche zwischen Helen Molesworth und Carla Arocha, sowie zwischen Helen Molesworth und Stéphane Schraenen handeln vor allem von Methoden und Ansätzen des Künstlerduos.

The artist duo Carla Arocha (born 1961 in Caracas, Venezuela) and Stéphane Schraenen (born 1971 in Antwerp, Belgium) was formed in 2006. Both live and work in Antwerp, Belgium.
The point of departure for their works is often, not always, photographs of mundane, everyday objects whose functionality and individuality are reduced during the artistic transformation process to the point where only the original idea remains. Arocha & Schraenen consciously suppress personal, individual gesture by frequently using industrial production methods and modular or serial systems.
The catalogue “What Now?” has been published by the Galerie Isabella Czarnowska, Berlin on the occasion of the exhibition “Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen: What Now?” (September 20th to November 30th 2013). The text was written by the British curator and author Ken Pratt and is supplemented by two lengthy interviews by Helen Molesworth, chief curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston. In the conversations Helen Molesworth mostly talks about the ideas and methods of the artist duo.
