In der Doppelausstellung „What is the Same“ im Maison de la culture et de la communication de Saint-Etienne (12.11.1986 – 16.01.1987) wurden die kritischen Stellungsnahmen zur Kunst von Louise Lawler und John Knight gegenübergestellt und beleuchtet.
Anlässlich dieser Ausstellung ist in Zusammenarbeit des Maison de la Culture et de la Communication de Saint-Etienne und der Galerie Isabella Kacprzak Köln der Katalog „Louise Lawler: What is the Same“ erschienen, in dem neben Fotografien von Louise Lawler ein ausführlicher Aufsatz des Autors Claude Gintz über „Das Gleiche und das Andere im Schaffensprozess von Louise Lawler“ enthalten ist. Denn die Arbeit von Louise Lawler ist nicht nur auf die Abbildung von anderer Kunst und deren Vermarktung fokussiert – das Objekt als Produkt, wie es der Museumsdirektor Yves Aupetitallot ausdrückt – , sondern besteht auch darin, die Positionen von Ausstellungen und Voyeurismus zu vertauschen.

The double exhibition “What is the Same” at the Maison de la Culture et de la Communication de Saint-Etienne (12 Nov. 1986 – 16 Jan. 1987) juxtaposed and illuminated the critical stances taken on art by Louise Lawler and John Knight.
The catalogue Louise Lawler: What is the Same was published jointly by the Maison de la Culture et de la Communication de Saint-Etienne and the Galerie Isabella Kacprzak, Cologne in conjunction with this exhibition. In addition to photographs by Louise Lawler, it features an in-depth essay by the author Claude Gintz on “The Same and the Other at work in the work of Louise Lawler”. Louise Lawler's work is directed not only towards the replication and marketing of art, but also consists in interchanging the positions of exhibitions and voyeurism.
